A dark dismal afternoon (tac tic to keep switching off) with a light north easterly wind and an ebbing tide. Four X boats came out to play (Magic Dragon joining us for the first time this season). As so often happens, for the first two thirds of the race we had adequate wind but by the penultimate mark the wind died and with a strong ebbing tide we stood no chance of getting home. However whilst we were making way it was very noticeable that Magic Dragon was going like a train downwind although not so good on the wind and Kathleen, who had a bad start, crept up the fleet and as the wind got lighter and lighter she went better and better and very nearly overtook Mischief. It was decided that we would have a result from our positions at the time that the Committee boat pulled the plug. We did not get ashore until after dark
